And another one of our more active members has also passed away:

Stephen E. Hirschberg (APA 664), June 13, 1947-October 7, 2013

Stephen E. Hirschberg, M.D., age 66, died at home on October 7, 2013, 7 ½ months after diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Brooklyn on June 13, 1947 to Morris Joel Hirschberg and Ann Lillian Hirschberg (Cohen), and grew up in Great Neck where he made lifelong friends. Steve took his BA from the University of Pennsylvania in three years, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and his MD from NYU School of Medicine. He served as a physician in the United States Navy 1974-1976, and then moved to Westchester, where he practiced internal medicine in Yonkers until his final illness. He cared deeply and personally about his patients and was proud of providing excellent medical care.

Steve was the founding chair of two Amnesty International groups, the longtime president of the Knollwood Neighborhood Civic Association, an avid outdoor photographer, a lover of puzzles, a student of the classical guitar, a fine letterpress printer, and an all-around good guy.

He leaves his wife and best friend, Arlene R. Popkin, his children David, Daniel (Elizabeth Austin) and Laura, his sister Barbara Lituchy (Richard), his cousin Judy Berlin (Martin) and many cherished friends.

Services will be held at Scarsdale Synagogue Temples Tremont and Emanuel, 2 Ogden Road, Scarsdale, at 10:15 AM on Thursday, October 10. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Doctors Without Borders.
